Robert Kerrey
Co-Founder & Senior Advisor
Robert Kerrey is Co-Founder and Senior Advisor of Rsquared, bringing to the firm a depth of public service, institutional leadership, and private sector experience that is, by any measure, singular. His presence at Rsquared reflects a belief that the principles governing risk and resilience — in combat, in government, in markets — are the same.
Senator Kerrey is a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, America's highest military distinction, awarded for his service as a U.S. Navy SEAL in Vietnam. That record of courage under the most extreme conditions imaginable is the foundation upon which everything that followed was built. He served as Governor of Nebraska from 1983 to 1987, and as a U.S. Senator from Nebraska from 1989 to 2001 — a twelve-year tenure during which he earned a reputation as one of the Senate's most independent and consequential voices on national security, fiscal policy, and education. He was also a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1992.
Following his time in the Senate, Senator Kerrey served as President of The New School University in New York City from 2001 to 2010, and as President Emeritus from 2011 to 2013 — leading one of America's most distinctive research universities through a decade of expansion. He has served as Executive Chairman of The Minerva Institute for Research and Scholarship since 2013, and as Managing Director at Allen & Company, the respected investment banking firm, since 2014.
Senator Kerrey holds a degree in pharmacy from the University of Nebraska.
